SCRIPTED FASHION

CALLIGRAPHY ON FABRIC

Curated exhibition

OCT 6–28, 2011

The Fashion Gallery at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

This special exhibition explores the various appearances of calligraphy, as well as popular traditional motifs featured in the ink painting, in a selection of creative and innovative works by nine internationally renowned fashion designers from all around the world. This exhibition has been arranged around three themes: character(文), landscape(山水), and flower(花). The first group of garments represents how characters from various languages can be brilliantly transformed into design elements. The second shows the creative transfer of landscape painting from paper to the surface of fabric and garments. Finally, the third includes garments that reflect “the Four Gracious Plants(四君子),” one of the most loved subjects in the Eastern art.

Each of the groups incorporates garments from different designers including Jayson Brunsdon (Australia), Shiatzy Chen (Taiwan), Geum Key-Sook (Korea), Jean Paul Gaultier (France), Li Wei (China), Lie Sang Bong (Korea), Martino Midali (Italy), Vivienne Tam (Hong Kong), and William Tang (Hong Kong). Last but not least, the exhibition is completed by four paintings and calligraphies from Chih Lo Lou Art Promotion (Non-profit Making) Limited.

This special annual exhibition Scripted Fashion: Calligraphy on Fabricpresents the wonderful and enduring love affair between fashion and art for designers with passion embedded in fashion and textiles.
